I know how to crochet but never did learn tatting. My aunt tried in vain but I never could do it. I never realized you could use a needle. I may still not be able to catch on, but it is worth a try.

I had the same problem with the shuttle...the needle is much more comfortable for me. I tried using the shuttle again, a few days ago. I can do it now, but I just don't enjoy it. Try the needle...it's fun! I've posted those links, hope they help you on your way!

This is off the topic but I wanted to share with you something I did while crocheting hat/scarves/mittens this winter. To solve the problem of our youngest pulling out the fringe on his scarf I put instead of the fringe, crochet curls which gives the allusion of "fringe" but is much sturdier(at the end of the scarf you join yarn with slip stitch then crochet 17 chains, turn and go into 3rd stitch from end with 2 double crochets and 2dc's in remainder of chain.) It curls and looks really cute or "kewl" as he puts it and solves the problem of him pulling out the threads of the fringe! I am not sure how this translate into knitting but I wanted to share it with you.
