Happy New Year!

Midnight, my friends! The family is asleep.

Strange...we all used to stay up to "ring in the New Year." Tonight, I'm ringing it in alone. The past few days have been very full--visitors from out of town and several late nights, wickedly funny rounds of Upwords and Phase 10. And the appropriate libations, of course. Guinness for the guys, Margaritas for the gals. All the excitement has taken it's toll on the children. They've never fallen asleep more quickly!

I'm looking forward to spending the day with my dear family. We'll share a New Year's meal of pork and sauerkraut (an old German/Pennsylvania Dutch tradition), with a side of black-eyed peas (from the good ol' South.) I'd be interested in hearing about your family's traditions for the New Year's meal--if you'd care to share!

Wishing you all many blessings...thanking God for all my dear friends...

Here's a great prayer to start the New Year:

Prayer for a Blessing on the New Year

O sacred and adorable Trinity, hear our prayers on behalf of our holy Father the Pope, our Bishops, our clergy, and for all that are in authority over us. Bless, we beseech Thee, during the coming year, the whole Catholic Church; convert heretics and unbelievers; soften the hearts of sinners so that they may return to Thy friendship; give prosperity to our country and peace among the nations of the world; pour down Thy blessings upon our friends, relatives, and acquaintances, and upon our enemies, if we have any; assist the poor and the sick; have pity on the souls of those whom this year has taken from us; and do Thou be merciful to those who during the coming year will be summoned before Thy judgment seat. May all our actions be preceded by Thy inspirations and carried on by Thy assistance, so that all our prayers and works, having been begun in Thee, may likewise be ended through Thee. Amen.

Pea soup for New Year's Day has always been the tradition in my French Canadian home. The superstition is that if you and your company finish the pot of soup, you will have money in your pocket all year 'round. Mom dismisses the accompanying superstition saying that it's just a good way to feed to feed a lot of people cheaply. :) Cheese and crackers or creton http://www.recipezaar.com/17992 and crackers usually accompany the soup.

I love pea soup! Unfortunately, my children seem to be opposed to anything that is green. They'll drink blue Kool Aide and eat blue ketchup, but think green is an unnatural food color!

Enjoy your day! Here in Burbank. CA there were two churches within walking distance of the hotel and neither even had a regular daily mass. Not a Holy Day of Obligation in the archdiocese whose cathedral is "Ugly as Sin."

Oh, Tom!

I'm so very sorry. Seems the sin is much bigger than the appearance of that cathedral. I wonder if the Bishop understands what "Holy Day of Obligation" means? Praying for you...
